Your First Tournament

Your first jiu-jitsu tournament

We want the RGV Open to be the first tournament everyone in the Valley competes at. Here is what to expect, whether it is your first tournament or your child’s.

Is the RGV Open a good first jiu-jitsu tournament?

That is what it is built for: our tagline is “Your First Tournament.” Every competitor is divided by age, weight and belt, matches run under IBJJF rules with no advantages, and all of our referees are black belts.

Is it OK for my kid’s first tournament?

Kids compete in kids’ divisions, matched with children of the same age, weight and belt. There are kids’ divisions in both gi and no-gi.

An RGV Open referee gets two young competitors in white and blue gis ready for their match.

How do I sign up?

Registration is on Smoothcomp. Choose your division there: your age group, weight, belt, and gi or no-gi. Prices and registration deadlines are on the same Smoothcomp page.

What are the weight classes?

Divisions and weight classes are listed on the Smoothcomp event page when you register.

Gi or no-gi?

Both. The RGV Open has gi and no-gi divisions for kids, teens, adults and masters.

Where and when do I weigh in?

Weigh-in times are posted on the Smoothcomp event page. The tournament itself starts at 10:00 AM.

How much does it cost for my family to watch?

Spectator entry is $10 per spectator, and parking is free. Each team gets 2 free coach badges.
